Elderly people who live at home but require regular care can apply to join a daycare center for one day a week or more.

A modest fee is paid for each day of stay.

Specialised daycare centers

Individuals with dementia can access activity services in specialized daycare centers where the aim is to slow down the progression of the disease through a variety of activities.

The goals of specialized day trainers are to:

  • Maintain the individual's independence for as long as possible by strengthening their physical and intellectual abilities, thus contributing to the fact that they can live at home for as long as possible.

  • Break social isolation and promote participation in daily activities.

  • Support relatives.

  • Monitor your daily health status.

  • Boost self-confidence, reduce discomfort and helplessness.

Emphasis is placed on flexibility in the activities and diverse activities and entertainment. Specialized daycare centers are run all over the country, although most of them are in the capital area.

Daycare with specialised rehabilitation

Daycares with specialized rehabilitation consists of day training where emphasis is placed on physical training and social activity.

The service is only for older people where rehabilitation is a prerequisite for the person to be able to continue living at home, or those who need rehabilitation following a hospital stay.

The day training is an 8-10 week program 3-5 days a week and is currently only available at two locations in the capital area.

Two daycare centers in the capital area offer these resorts. They are Múlabær and Hrafnista Laugarási.

Seiglan – for people with early onset dementia

In the Life Quality Center at St. Jó. In Hafnarfjörður, there is a service center for persons with a short history of dementia and therefore at the stage of mild cognitive impairment.

For a long time, there was a lack of resources for this group, who could be said to have been waiting at home to become sick enough to qualify for services in specialised daycare centers.

Seiglan, which means „resilience“, offers several different services each month based on mental, physical and social training

Seiglan works according to the philosophy of occupational therapy.
