Angling

Fishing for salmon and trout on a pole is permitted in rivers and lakes all over Iceland with the required permit, unless otherwise specified.
Fishing for salmon in the sea is strictly prohibited as well as fishing for trout in the sea (sea trout and char).

Angling clubs, landowners, renters, etc. around the country handle the sale of fishing permits for salmon and trout fishing.

Fishing in lakes

Fishing in lakes requires a fishing permit (Veiðikortið), but it provides almost unlimited access to dozens of waters around the country. The card costs 9,900 ISK and comes with a manual for each sold card, where you can find instructions and rules.

It is also worth pointing out that you can buy the Fishing Card subsidized from many unions.

Sea angling

Sea angling is permitted on special permission, provided that it is only for self-sufficiency. No salmon or trout are allowed to be caught in the waters around Iceland. Special rules apply to the operation of recreational fishing boats.
