How much does health insurance contribute to the cost of assisted reproduction treatment?

Participation by Icelandic Health in the cost of assisted reproduction treatment shall include the works specified in the specialist cost of the Icelandic Health. Icelandic Health does not cover other treatments than those specified therein.

Refund of health insurance is as follows:

  1. 5% of the time in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and microscopic fertilisation (ICSI).

  2. 65% of second to fourth cycles of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and microscopic fertilisation (ICSI).

  3. 65% of the following:

    1. for the collection and freezing of ova, or, as appropriate, embryos, in the case of women with impending infertility problems due to foreseeable medicinal treatment, radiation treatment or bone marrow transplantation, b.

    2. for thawing and fertilising eggs, cf. art. a,

    3. for testicular puncture and cryopreservation of sperm, or, as the case may be, embryos, in the case of men with impending infertility problems due to anticipated medicinal treatment, radiation therapy or bone marrow transplantation, b.

    4. for storage fees of frozen embryos/oocytes/spermphocytes, in the cases specified in points a and c, for a maximum of 10 years.

    5. for the first time in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and microscopic fertilisation (ICSI), in cases of infertility problems due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or bone marrow transplantation.

Treatment under items 1, 2 and 3(a) and (e) shall include the cost of necessary tests, interviews with specialists and necessary medicinal products for the treatment, other than ovarian stimulants, the payment of which is subject to the Regulation on Icelandic Health contribution to the cost of medicinal products.
