Marriage

Marriage at the District Commissioner's office

A marriage ceremony shall take place within 30 days from the date of the certificate of no impediments to marriage.

The minimum cost of a civil marriage ceremony is ISK 11.000 kronur.
The ceremony takes place at The District Commissioners office during office hours.
Upon request the marriage ceremony may take place outside the office and after office hours. It depends on the circumstances of each office whether it is possible to grant these requests. Additional fee must be paid for this service.

When the marriage ceremony has taken place, the District Commissioner will send notification of the marriage to the Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá).

There is no dress code at a civil marriage ceremony and it is not necessary to exchange rings. It is allowed to bring guests, depending on what the premises in each location allow. Usually witnesses can be provided if requested.
