Vehicle inspection manual

A new Inspection Manual for vehicles entered into force on 1 March 2023. The handbook is by far the largest comparable to the older one in terms of inspection details, inspection methods, equipment and judgements. However, you can find changes in emphasis, new points of view and a new set-up.

The observation manual is available at samgongustofa.is/skodunarhandbok. New and improved installations are being made here on this website.

The inspection manual is divided into three parts, the first one with a preface describing the inspection system, the second one with procedure and the third one with more detailed information.

In each inspection, both the condition of the vehicle is checked and the technical compliance with the requirements observed. For example, the vehicle identification number is checked and the odometer reading recorded, exhaust pollution measured, headlights alignment and lighting equipment checked, thread depth in tyres measured, methane system and gas equipment checked, drawbar and towing capacity checked, condition of fire extinguishers, underrun protection, speed limiter, hazardous cargo (ADR) and wheel balancing (an abnormal wheel position may require a wheel stance certificate).
