Vehicle delisting

Deregistration request

Vehicles discarded

If a vehicle is decommissioned, it must be disposed of to get the device deregistered. The vehicle must be returned to recycling at a recycling centre. The Recycling Fund pays a return fee for vehicles returned to recycling. More information on the payment of the return fee and the electronic process of delisting for recycling can be obtained.

Vehicles out of the country

If you want to move your vehicle out of Iceland and register abroad, you must deregister it in Iceland. You must fill out and submit supporting documents, such as a letter of credit and a license plate or a registration certificate from a new country.

A vehicle is lost

  • If a vehicle is lost or stolen, you must fill out a form to get it de-registered.

  • If a vehicle has been stolen, it must be reported immediately to the police, where the vehicle will be searched.

If a vehicle is not found within six weeks, you can contact the Icelandic Transport Authority.

The vehicle is ruined

If a vehicle was registered out of service before 1 July 2003 and has been disposed of but a certificate of return cannot be issued, you can apply to the Icelandic Transport Authority.
