Application to run a taxi station

Those wishing to act as intermediaries in taxi services must apply for a permit to operate a taxi station with the Icelandic Transport Authority.

The process

  1. Take a course at Mjódd Driving School

  2. Apply for a permit at ICETRA and submit all documents

  3. Meet the conditions for a permit

  4. Permit issued for five years

Supporting documents

It is important to submit all supporting documents with an application.

  • Confirmation of financial standing, e.g. endorsed annual financial statement or certified tax return

  • Confirmation of legal registration history – Certificate confirming legal registration history of legal domicile - island.is or National registry (Búsetutímavottorð)

    • If applicant has had a legal domicile registered in another country, a certificate from criminal record from the applicable country/countries has to be turned in with the application according to point 3 in Paragraph 2 of Article 6 of the Taxi Act

  • Individuals who are nationals of non-EEA countries shall present a residence and work permit.

ICETRA has an overview of those who have completed taxi courses and will obtain information regarding criminal records and therefore such documents do not need be submitted.

Processing of applications

  • ICETRA issues a permit for five years when all conditions are met and payment has been received.

  • When a request for documents is not complete or the conditions are not met, ICETRA notifies the applicant by e-mail.

Cost

  • The cost of a permit is in accordance with the tariff of the Icelandic Transport Authority and is 16.000 ISK

  • The cost of relevant courses for taxis shall be determined by the driving school tariff.

  • Certificates and documents that need to be obtained from other institutions shall be paid for by the applicant.
