Registering a vehicle out of use

Request for temporary de-registration of a vehicle

Registration mark deposit

Vehicles can be temporarily withdrawn from circulation by submitting number plates to the Icelandic Transportation Office or inspection posts. If the vehicle has two number plates, both plates shall be submitted. The filing of numbers stops the levying of car taxes and it is possible to have insurance cancelled by vehicles in general use.

Registration mark audit

Only the registered owner or keeper may issue number plates and must present identification. Before retrieving the license plates, the vehicle must be insured.

Ticketing traffic

If the vehicle number plate cannot be removed, a sticker with the words "Forbidden use" affixed over the inspection sticker may be delivered or sent. With registration from traffic with a ticket, the levying of car fees is stopped and no negligence fee is imposed on vehicles. It is not guaranteed that vehicles registered as having stopped traffic are not covered by insurance. An owner or keeper must contact his/her insurance company.

Withdrawal shall be prohibited.

Cost

  • 1.114 ISK paid upon admission or delivery of tickets. Registration marks shall be kept for one year.

  • A storage fee must be paid again if the plan is to keep the registration plates longer.
