Pre-registration for car services

Vehicles that are transported to Iceland must be pre-registered with the Icelandic Transport Authority. Auto agencies can choose three routes.

  • Construct interfaces with direct connection to the Icelandic Transport Authority's registration system.

  • Use electronic interface.

  • Pre-file by filling in paper form.

Pre-registering when using an electronic interface

Individuals who pre-register for automobiles for automobile commissions must have the rights of Representative A.

Attachment data

  • COC/ECOC certificate or certificate of origin. The ECOC can be submitted electronically or an original COC certificate can be scanned.

When the vehicle has been pre-registered, the commission receives registration confirmation and the vehicle is assigned a fixed number. The Directorate of Communications orders number plates and the car auction shall retrieve registration plates from the Directorate of Transport. Number plate production times are 3 business days.

Customs clearance

When a vehicle has been assigned a fixed number, a customs declaration must be prepared and sent to the Director of Customs. The authorisation for delivery is granted when a vehicle has been cleared by customs and all import charges have been paid by the Director of Customs in Reykjavík.

New registration

If an automobile agency has an employee with the rights of a representative B, he/she may inspect and register the car. Otherwise, the vehicle must be taken to an inspection post and the vehicle must be newly registered.

Cost

Those who use pre-registration electronically must apply to be in accounts with the Icelandic Transportation Authority. Those who are not in account transactions are sent a payment voucher to the home bank.
