All vehicles transported to Iceland must be pre-registered with the Icelandic Transportation Authority.

Before moving a vehicle to Iceland, consideration shall be given to whether the vehicle is permitted in Iceland and what taxes and fees must be paid.

The process

Apply for pre-registration

When a vehicle is set off for Iceland, an application for pre-registration may be submitted. The application must be accompanied by the original:

  • bill of lading (name of applicant must be the same as that on the bill of lading)

  • COC certificate or certificate of origin

  • registration certificate or title letter

  • manufacturer's certificate or technical certificate (if car is not imported from the EEA)

When the vehicle has been pre-registered, registration confirmation is granted to the applicant and the vehicle is assigned a fixed number. The Directorate of Communications orders number plates and sends them to an inspection post. Number plate production times are 3 business days.

Customs clearance

When a vehicle has been assigned a fixed number, a customs declaration must be prepared and filed with the Director of Customs.

The authorisation for delivery is granted when a vehicle has been cleared by customs and all import charges have been paid by the Director of Customs in Reykjavík.

Insurance

The vehicle must be secured in order to receive a short-term signal so that the vehicle can be brought to a checkpoint.

Delivery of short-term signal

The Directorate of Communications and most inspection stations sell short-term tags (cardboard labels). When the vehicle has been insured, a short-term signal can be generated to move the vehicle to a workshop or inspection post for registration. Short-term signals are not delivered unless vehicles are insured. At the Icelandic Transportation Authority, a short-term signal for one day is 1.114 ISK.

Delivery of a vehicle

Once a delivery authorisation has been granted and a short-term signal has been retrieved, the vehicle may be collected from the carrier and taken to the inspection post, which should have received electronic confirmation of the delivery authorisation from the Director of Customs.

Inspection station new registration

The vehicle must be taken to the inspection post to which the vehicle plate (fixed number) is dispatched. The inspection post shall register the vehicle and notify the insurance company of the new registration.

Cost

Taxes and fees must be paid upon registration and import of a vehicle. The cost varies according to the price of the vehicle, but you can calculate the cost here.

There is also a need to pay for a new registration and registration inspection, the cost being subject to the tariff of the selected inspection station.
