Police traffic control regarding inspection status and condition

Police traffic control

Police are responsible for monitoring vehicles in traffic regarding the status of the inspection and condition. It can both stop vehicles and carry out spot checks, but also call vehicles for inspection by an inspection body.

  • If the police stop a vehicle which is not in a legally registered condition, either due to deficiencies or omission of an inspection, they shall call the vehicle to an inspection station.

  • Road side inspections (spot checks) are primarily carried out on larger vehicles, such as trucks and buses. Road side inspections are planned and special equipment for use in the inspections is in place.

Vehicle called to inspection

When the police call a vehicle for inspection, it shall be valid to:

  • A special invitation label is affixed to the registration plates.

  • A deadline is set for the vehicle to be examined by an inspection station. The maximum time limit for the police to move vehicles to inspection is 7 days.

  • The invitation is recorded in the vehicle registry.

The police may remove a registration plate from the vehicle on the spot if there is a threat to road safety or if it does not have valid insurance.

Preparation for inspection after being called

When an inspection body inspects a vehicle that has been brought in for inspection because the police called it in for inspection due to deficiencies, nothing may be wrong with the vehicle (except for minor modifications), otherwise it will be banned from driving (use prohibited).

This is important:

  • Immediately have the condition of the vehicle checked and have everything in the system restored.

  • The vehicle is then taken to the inspection body before the deadline for the inspection.

or

  • Suspend its operation by removing the registration plates and returning them to Samgöngustofa or to an inspection station.

If a vehicle has not been brought in for inspection before the deadline for the inspection, the police will remove the registration plate from the vehicle.
