Full drivers license

An application for the issue of a full drivers licence may be completed on Ísland.is or submitted to the Commisoners Office, irrespective of where the applicant resides.

Applications may be made for a full licence if the driver held a provisional licence for a continuous period of 12 months, completed a driving school 3 and underwent a driving assessment. If the driver does not wish to exercise this authorisation or does not meet the conditions, the provisional licence shall continue to be valid until its expiry after three years from the date of issue. After this period the driver will be issued with a full licence if he fulfils the above conditions. If he/she fails to comply with these requirements, however, he/she shall be re-issued with a provisional certificate for a period of three years.

Before issuing an fully certificated licence, the driver shall undergo a driving assessment to check whether the driver''s assessment of his own driving performance, driving behaviour and road safety in accordance with his actual ability.

Cost

The full certificate costs 8,600 ISK.

Conditions

• Have had provisional licence for at least 1 year

• Have completed Driving school 3

• Have completed the driving evaluation

• Have adequate vision and hearing

• Be physically and mentally competent to operate a car

• Remain permanently resident in Iceland

• Not received a point due to traffic violations and/or suspensions in the past 12 months

In certain cases, you must submit a passcode picture. This applies if:

• Image too old and not marked with quality / image has been submitted by June 2013. • Image not available in system/licence of previous model. • You have changed a name. • If you have changed gender.

• If you answer yes to any question in the health declaration, you will need a medical certificate from your general practitioner or an appropriate specialist doctor.

If the person in question is wearing glasses or lenses, has impaired vision or impaired vision, a medical certificate from a general practitioner or ophthalmologist is required.

Application process

An application for a renewal of driving licence must be completed. The application must be accompanied by a passport and a health declaration or medical certificate, if applicable.
