Older driving rights

The back of the driving licences shows the categories of driving licences that the person has in addition to their period of validity. Those who received a license (public driving licence) before 01.01.1997 were granted additional entitlements.

Those who took a license before 01.01. 1997 are entitled to drive

  • passenger cars exceeding 3500 kg or more, in total authorised weight

  • passenger cars with trailer/connector with a maximum authorised weight exceeding 750 kg

  • a light motorcycle not designed to travel at more than 45 km/h on two or three wheels

  • tractor capable of being coupled to a trailer/coupling vehicle

Those who took a driving licence before 01.06.1993 have the right to drive

  • passenger cars in category B

  • passenger cars with trailer/coupling device in category BE

  • a moped designed for travelling at not more than 45 km/h on two or three wheels

  • tractor capable of being coupled to a trailer/coupling vehicle

  • a vehicle, made up of 8 passengers or less, in addition to the driver, and with a maximum authorised weight exceeding 3500 kg but not exceeding 7500 kg, which may be combined with a trailer/coupling device exceeding 750 kg in the authorised total weight. The total authorized weight of a wagon train may not exceed 12,000 kg.

  • car for up to 5000 kg of cargo (5 tonnes payload right)

Those who took a driving licence before 01.03 1988 have the right to drive

  • passenger cars in category B

  • passenger cars with trailer/coupling device in category BE

  • a light motorcycle not designed to travel at more than 45 km/h on two or three wheels

  • tractor capable of being coupled to a trailer/coupling vehicle

  • a vehicle, made up of 8 passengers or less, in addition to the driver, and with a maximum authorised weight exceeding 3500 kg but not exceeding 7500 kg, which may be combined with a trailer/coupling device exceeding 750 kg in the authorised total weight. The total authorized weight of a wagon train may not exceed 12,000 kg.

  • car for up to 5000 kg of cargo (5 tonnes payload right)

  • a vehicle in category D1 whose length does not exceed 8 metres and which is designed for 16 passengers or less, in addition to the driver, and which can be coupled to a trailer/coupling vehicle of a maximum authorised weight exceeding 750 kg

Those who took a license before 12.04.1960 have the right to drive

  • passenger cars in category B

  • passenger cars with trailer/coupling device in category BE

  • a light motorcycle not designed to travel at more than 45 km/h on two or three wheels

  • tractor capable of being coupled to a trailer/coupling vehicle

  • a vehicle, made up of 8 passengers or less, in addition to the driver, and with a maximum authorised weight exceeding 3500 kg but not exceeding 7500 kg, which may be combined with a trailer/coupling device exceeding 750 kg in the authorised total weight. The total authorized weight of a wagon train may not exceed 12,000 kg.

  • car for up to 5000 kg of cargo (5 tonnes payload right)

  • a vehicle in category D1 whose length does not exceed 8 meters and which is designed for 16 passengers or less, in addition to the driver, and which can be coupled to a trailer/coupling vehicle of a maximum authorised weight exceeding 750 kg

Rights related to trailer/coupling device

  1. A driving licence issued before 15.08 1997, which confers the right to operate a vehicle of category B, C1, C, D1 or D, also confers entitlement for categories BE, C1E, CE, D1E and DE, respectively.

  2. A driving licence issued from 15.08 1997 onwards before the entry into force of this Regulation, which grants the right to operate a category B vehicle with a trailer/coupling device (BE category), may be operated with a category B vehicle with a trailer/coupling vehicle with a weight exceeding 3,500 kg.
