Digital application for legal aid

Digital applications for legal aid are now available on Ísland.is, were individuals can apply for the cost of a legal case to be paid by the State Treasury.

Legal aid is when the costs of a legal action by individuals are paid by the Treasury. Legal aid is only granted to individuals and not to companies or companies.

The application system for Ísland.is is now in digital form. This means that the application is submitted paperless to the Ministry of Justice case system directly.

Further information on the type of legal aid, refund and more can be found on Ísland.is. When submitting applications for legal aid digitally, it is necessary to submit all the documents that are to accompany an application through the application system at the same time. Applications through the application system will replace paper applications, but it will continue to be possible to submit written applications for those who so request.

Individuals may apply directly themselves or with the assistance of a lawyer.

Rules on legal aid shall determine in which cases the cost of legal proceedings by an individual is paid by the Treasury. The rules are found on Althingi.is.

Applications are made to the Ministry of Justice, which requests the opinion of the Legal Aid Committee on the application. Legal aid is not granted unless the Public Legal Aid Committee recommends legal aid. Further information on the conditions of legal aid may be found on the website of the Ministry of Justice.
