Further details

Application process

You need to

  • submit an application for a new driving license to the sheriff's department

  • selecting a driving instructor

  • select driving school

One application form must be submitted to the district commissioner for each right to be taken.

The application must be accompanied by:

  • photograph (if not available in system)

  • health certificate

If these conditions are satisfied, the district commissioner shall send a study authorisation to the Primary Schools.

The learning process

Theoretical training

The academic program takes place in driving schools and is divided into undergraduate and specialist programs.

Undergraduate studies involve:

  • traffic theory

  • traffic psychology

  • car technology

  • first aid

The specificity depends on the chosen vehicle.

After completing driving training, you are authorised to take a safety test at Frumherji. You can find it in my Pages of First impressions.

Practical training

After completion of the safety test, a practical training course may be commenced with a driving instructor. The number of hours of work required to complete varies by right.

Finally, a practical test is taken at Frumherji. This includes:

You must include confirmation of all the practical and written components you have already completed, in the practical examination.

More than one advanced examination

Only one practical assessment can be taken at a time. Once the District Commissioner has processed this, he/she shall issue a permit for the next one. Sometimes it can take a few days between examinations.

If you take more than one roadside test, a provisional driving authorisation can be issued, valid for the categories of roadside examination you have already taken.

Issuing of driving licenses

If you pass the examination and meet the requirements for a further examination, you can go to the District Commissioner and get a new driving license issued. It applies to the categories of vehicles that you are now entitled to operate.

Cost

Costs shall be based on the driving school tariff. There are also examination fees to be paid from the Primary School and costs for a new driving license from the District Commissioner.
