Freight transport permit

Application for freight transport permit

Parties engaged in commercial freight transport shall be required to hold an operating permit. This shall apply where:

  • maximum permissible laden weight exceeding 3,5 tons (or 2,5 tons for international cargo operations)

  • the maximum authorized speed of the vehicles is equal to or greater than 45 kilometers per hour

Commercial transportation is the transport of freight when the transportation service is sold separately and the carrier operates the transportation service.

The process

  1. Attend a course from the Mjódd Driving School

  2. Submit all documents with the Icelandic Transport Authority

  3. Fulfill the conditions for the permit

  4. The freight transport permit is issued for five years or on a temporary basis until the course has been completed

Supporting documents

It is important to submit all supporting documents with an application.

  • Annual financial statement or certified tax return of the applicant on satisfactory financial position

  • Confirmation that public fees are not in arrears - island.is or Skatturinn

  • Certificate of Criminal Registration for the responsible person (Sakavottorð) - Island.is

  • Confirmation of legal registration history – Certificate confirming legal registration history of legal domicile for the responsible person - island.is or National registry (Búsetutímavottorð)

    • If applicant has had a legal domicile registered in another country, a certificate from criminal record from the applicable country/countries has to be turned in with the application

  • Confirmation from the Tax Registry of Companies that the business operation has been registered applicably

  • List of vehicle numbers to be operated

Processing of applications

  • The Icelandic Transport Authority issues a freight transport permit for five years when all conditions are met and payment has been received

  • When a request for documents is not complete or the conditions are not met, the Icelandic Transport Authority notifies the applicant via email

  • Handling of applications for freight transport permit is up to 15 working days

Cost

  • The cost of freight transport permit is in accordance with the tariff of the Icelandic Transportation Authority and is 17.220 ISK

  • The cost of a permit holder's course is subject to the driving school tariff

  • Certificates and documents to be obtained from other institutions shall be paid for by the applicant.
