When should vehicle be registered as a damaged vehicle?

A vehicle should be registered as a damaged vehicle if it has suffered damage that may affect its drivability and safety. If such damage has occurred to a vehicle, the vehicle shall be registered as a damaged vehicle and its use prohibited.

In general, vehicle should be registered as a damage vehicle if it has had a collision in such a way that its structure and or wheel mounts have been damaged. A vehicle should also be registered as a damage vehicle if its safety equipment has been activated during a collision.

Registration of damage vehicle

The police and the tax authorities are authorized to send in a report on a damaged vehicle. Vehicles reported by them are registered as damage vehicles I.

Vehicles that have been assessed as a damaged vehicle by an insurance company and are reported by them are registered as a damage vehicle II.

Owner of a vehicle is also authorized to report a damaged vehicle. Damage vehicle that are reported by owner are registered as a damage vehicle II.

Damage vehicle I is registered as damage vehicle II if it has not been submitted for reassessment.

Reassessment of damaged vehicles

Vehicles that have been registered as damage vehicles I can be re-assessed at inspection station within 20 working days of damage registration on the vehicle. Reassessment may lead to cancellation of a damage record or registration of a vehicle as a damage vehicle II.

Repair of a vehicle

When a vehicle has been registered as a damage vehicle II it needs to be repaired by an approved car repair shop if it is to be registered again in traffic.

Submission of registration plates

Following the repair of a damaged vehicle, carried out by an approved car repair shop, the vehicle shall be brought to inspection. Number plates are handed over after inspection. Number plates may not be handed over unless the result of the inspection is "without comments" or "repair".

Cost

The fee for invalidating damage registration, following a repair is 1.071 ISK.
