A digital application must be made for a licence to sell alcohol at the production site of the District Commissioner in South Iceland. The licence fee is ISK 50,000.-

Application and conditions

An applicant must complete a digital application and must include the following documents:

  • A copy of the licence to produce alcohol.

  • A copy of the production reports for the last calendar year.

  • Copy of certificate from the Register of Companies.

Once an application has been received, it will be reviewed in light of the requirements that the district commissioner is required to consider:

  1. that the applicant holds a licence to produce alcohol.

  2. The applicant shall not produce more than 500,000 litres of alcohol in a calendar year.

    1. If the applicant produces less than 100,000 litres per calendar year, he/she may sell alcohol in the volume of more than 12% pure alcohol if he/she meets other conditions for granting such a licence.

    2. If the applicant produces more than 100,000 litres per calendar year, he/she may sell alcohol of a volume less than 12% pure alcohol if he/she meets other conditions for granting such a licence.

If the application fulfils the conditions that the district commissioner is to observe, it will be sent to the council for a comment on the operations planned.

Review process

The opinion of the municipal council shall be clear and reasoned and state whether the following conditions are met:

  1. Operations shall be in accordance with building permits and the planning terms.

  2. A final assessment has been carried out of the premises.

  3. The time and location of the site to which the application relates is within the limits laid down by the municipal regulations and the organisation of the municipality.

  4. Operations are in accordance with the provisions of the Health and Pollution Prevention Act and the Food Act and, when applicable, the Health Committee's assessment of the environmental impact of the operations, including acoustics.

  5. Fire protection requirements, based on the planned activities, are met according to the assessment of the fire service.

Issuing of licences

After receiving a positive or conditional opinion from the local authority, the District Commissioner for the Southern Region shall issue licences for the sale of alcohol at the place of manufacture.

The sheriff of South Iceland may not issue a licence to sell alcohol at a production site if the municipal council opposes its issue with a negative opinion.

Duration of validity

The period of validity of a licence is one year for the first time. When a licence is renewed, its validity is not limited in time.

The retail alcohol delivery time will never exceed 08:00 to 23:00. The sale of alcohol at retail outlets at the production place is prohibited on the liturgical days of the National Church, on the summer day of the first, 1 May, 17 June and the first Monday in August.
