Cost

Application to become a supervisor is free

Eligibility

The supervisor is a parent or other person who accompanies a candidate in an accompanied driving. In order to obtain a licence as a supervisor, the person in question must meet the following conditions:

  • Have reached the age of 24.

  • Have a valid license for category B for at least 5 years.

  • Have not been deprived of a licence to drive or punished for deviant driving in the past 12 months.

The practice licence

The exercise licence is issued in the name of the supervisor and student and the licence is sent to both parties to the mailbox on island.is. The licence is valid for up to 18 months, but never for longer than the licence is valid. The licence automatically expires when the candidate has obtained a driving licence. The supervisor must carry the licence during training runs and show it when the police so demand. For training purposes, the instructor is considered to be the manager of a vehicle. Licences may be withdrawn in special circumstances. The supervisor may not charge a fee for guiding a driver in an accompanied driving.

Car used in accompanied driving

A car used for accompanied driving with a supervisor may not exceed 3,500 kg, of the total authorised weight. A trailer/coupling device may be coupled to the vehicle up to 750 kg. The vehicle must be specially identified for accompanied driving to instructions issued by the Icelandic Transportation Authority. Driving schools give their students plates/identification to symbol the cars used in accompanied driving. The identification symbol may not be used for other driving. Students learning to drive a manual car may take a practice run with the instructor on an automatic car.

No special application is required for a licence for the car.

The exercise programme

Training runs are an additional exercise with the instructor and are not a substitute for teaching runs with a driving instructor. During a training run, the student practices driving a guided car, which is often a parent or other family member who meets the requirements; the supervisor is considered to be the vehicle's manager. No fee may be charged for guiding in a training run. In other respects, the provisions of Article 68 of the Traffic Act apply to training with a supervisor.

Authorisation of instructors holding an EEA national driving licence

  • Supervisors with a driving licence from an EEA state must attend the sheriff's office with their driving licence.

After a practice run, a few hours of driving instructors take over again in preparation for examinations.
