Laboratory Physician/scientist - Genetics and Cytogenomics Laboratories (One year position)

Landspitali - National University Hospital of Iceland is increasing investment into Genomic Medicine. As a part of this effort we are seeking a Laboratory Medicine Physician or scientist with expertise in Cytogenetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics to join a team of 35 staff members in the Department of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (GMM).
The department delivers comprehensive genetics services to the population of Iceland. The department includes a clinical genetics and genetic counseling unit. It operates specialized laboratories in biochemical genetics including prenatal and newborn screening, cytogenetics and molecular genetics.

Genomics and cytogenomics are rapidly growing fields. Teaching, training and research are an integral part of departmental work. GMM has academic affiliation with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Faculty of Medicine, University of Iceland. Honorary academic appointments would be available for candidates with suitable background and research. Human genetics has a proud tradition in Iceland and our department actively collaborates with deCODE genetics which has sequenced more than a 1/5 of the Icelandic population.

Work atmosphere at GMM emphasizes cooperation, flexibility, support, ambition and positive team spirit. We work in interdisciplinary teams within GMM and with other organizational units in the hospital.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
• Clinical specialist of a clinical laboratory section
• Clinical case review, sign out, interpretation and consultation on tests and results
• Development and validation of new tests
• Strategic planning and development of service with department management
• Other tasks based on expertise and experience
• Consultations in area of expertise
• Teaching and research

QUALIFICATIONS
• License to practice medicine or board certification in cytogenetics, molecular genetics
• Expertise in clinical molecular genetics, cytogenetics or laboratory genetics and genomics
• Further professional development to meet departmental goals
• Positive outlook, flexibility and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Teaching and research experience is preferable

FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE POSITION AND APPLICATION:
Position is full-time (100%) employment for 1 year. Terms and wages are according to collective agreements between the government and Icelandic Medical Association. Landspitali is committed to an equal pay policy. The position is available from April 1st, 2026, or as agreed upon.
