Subsidy for nutrition and special diets

Health insurance subsidizes vital nutrients and dietary foods when disease or the consequences of accidents cause significant problems in taking and taking nutrients and in cases of long-term need, at least three months.

The following are subsidised:

  • Amino acid mixture due to metabolic defects

  • Tube feeding (sonic feeding) accessories and pump

  • Parenteral nutrition accessories

  • Nutritional beverages, general and special

  • Thickeners for swallowing difficulties

  • Diet with protein restriction due to metabolic impairment

  • Peptide milk/amino acid mixture for milk allergy for children 0-2 years

Application process

  • The physician and/or dietician shall assess the need and send an application.

    - Application is sent electronically

    - If a medical doctor is sending an application, a medical certificate must always be available, but it may already exist with Health Insurance.

  • A response letter with information on the decision is published in your Rights portal (My pages)

  • A procurement authorisation is issued for nutrients and dietary foods, stating the payment participation and validity period

  • Individuals see approved authorisations, their status, duration too in

Purchases of nutrients/dietary foods

When buying, the supplier's ID number is given as a reference for the database. Individuals pay their share directly to the seller when appropriate. Suppliers send Health Insurance an invoice for purchases.

Authorisation for audit

The authorisation for an assessment is based on invoices that have been received by the Icelandic Health Insurance and have been paid. The authorisation for assessment may be higher than the maximum amount per month, but it is a 3-month window for the authorisation to be used as efficiently as possible.

The authorisation for an assessment is based on

  • the previous month and the amount of money spent there

  • current months

  • the following month due to permission to withdraw the 2-month dose

Sign-ups for purchases

If a purchase has been paid in cash by the user, receipts can be sent to the Health Insurance Administration:

  • with electronic submission to the Register in the Rights portal (type of submission: Disposable aids)

  • to the Health Insurance helpdesk

It is important that the ID number of the person who owns the authorisation is shown along with bank details for a refund.
