Exemption for the importation of medicines by individuals

Medicines carried by individuals in their luggage or sent by mail and parcel delivery are considered personal importation of medicines. Different rules apply to the mailing and shipping of medicines depending on the category of the medicines and their origin.

The Icelandic Medicines Agency is authorized to grant exemptions from the provisions when it can be demonstrated that restrictions on the authorization to import medicines for personal use, endanger the health or life of an individual.

  • Regarding narcotics and addictive drugs - The Medicines Agency must approve the exemption before the drug is brought into the country.

  • General medicines - An exemption must be applied for no later than two weeks after the drug arrives in the country.
