Residence permit renewal for refugees

Renewal of a residence permit for refugees is applied for digitally online. You must have an electronic certificate to fill out your application, see electronic certificate registration sites.

The application does not need to be completed in one session; fill-in can be paused and continued when convenient within the next 60 days.

Who is this application for

This application is only for renewing residence permits for refugees. Refugees are those who have been granted international protection or subsidiary protection in Iceland.

Who is this application not for

This application is not for holders of residence permits for humanitarian reasons nor holders of other residence permits. They renew their permits with this application.

Processing fee

There is no fee for an application for renewal of a residence permit for refugees.

Procedure

You must apply for a renewal of your residence permit before the expiry of you current permit. Please do not submit a renewal application with more than two months remaining on your current permit.

The processing time for renewal is maximum 90 days after satisfactory documents have been received, except for more complex applications that require further processing. If you submit satisfactory supporting documents with an application, the processing usually takes shorter time.

If you continue to meet the requirements for a residence permit, the permit will be renewed. After you receive an answer you must visit the Directorate of Immigration or an office of a District Commissioner outside of the Reykjavík capital area to have your picture taken for a new residence permit card. Remember to bring your passport to prove your identity.

The production of a new residence card normally takes 10 days. You will receive an sms when the card is ready for pick-up at the Directorate's reception in Dalvegur 18. If you would rather pick up the card at a district commissioner's office outside the capital area, please mention this when you come to have your photo taken.
